In all the years I've taught, 1st-5th grade students are required to create a map of some kind...usually starting with mapping your classroom (whole group) and then having students map their home or their own room. In my quest to find a way to spice up this lesson, I stumbled upon the Floor Planner website! It is incredibly cool and allowed my homeschooler to create a 2D model of our home....not only that, with just one click, we were able to make the 2D layout we created into a 3D model! I have to say, that this was as much fun for me to learn as it was for my 2nd grader!
If you haven't checked out their website, click here:
The art of instruction can certainly feel like organized chaos! I hope that this blog provides some wonderful resources to help you organize the amazing talents you already have and hopefully alleviate some stress by providing you with fun & exciting activities to incorporate in your classroom!

Literature Circle Student Responsibility Cards
Here you will find activity cards to use when implementing Literature Circles in your classroom. I have introduced Lit. Circle to my class by using read alouds and then focusing on just one responsibility each time. Once all of the students have had the opportunity to do it with you, they can then begin to break apart into groups and be assigned roles. These roles change throughout the reading of an assigned novel.
There are SO many activities students can do within Literature Circles....if you have a role/responsibility that I have not listed on one of the cards, please let me know and I will happily create an additional card for you!
Enjoy!

I'm TOTALLY guilty of letting weeks go by without a post...please forgive me. I'm sure all of us (educators) have been running around CRAZY and I am certainly doing the same.
To make my absence up to you, I have added to the adapted Systematic Sequential Phonics (Patricia Cunningham) SMART Board lessons to include 1-20 (adding s, es, ies) and 78-84 (prefixes). I've got quite a few new freebies I plan to share this weekend, so be on the lookout.

Word Families-Word Sort & Study
Happy Friday! Sorry I've been out all weel...it has been crazy (once again) and I just haven't been able to get online. Last weekend Mallory had strep and no I had to bring Dylan home early with a stomach ache :) I'm praying that it doesn't spread!
Now that the kiddos are all down, I figured I'd share a goodie for my Kinder/1st teachers out there. I put together some of the word endings that Kinder and 1st grade are studying. I have included both the color-coded and black/white version if you do not have a color copier. We usually cut them out and match them to a picture mat (which I am working on and will post soon). Until then, this is a great activity for students to manipulate on their desk or pocket chart. It has the word endings, first letter sounds, blends, and digraphs. Here is alist of the endings:

Teacher Gifts-Notepads
The past few years my friend Ranesia and I have printed up these really cute/useful "To Do List" pads for our teachers. We have Printshop put them on brightly colored cardstock (printed front/back) and then bind them with the waxy binding that allows teachers to pull off the sheets once they are finished with them. They were a huge hit when we first gave them out and have done it ever since.
I've already got some printed and ready to go (along with a cute flower pen) that my CTL and I can hand out...I'm so excited and thought I'd share!
Use if you'd like!

Team Gift: 2012-2013 Lesson Planner
In my preparation for a new school year (and my fabulous 3rd grade team), I created a planner for my teachers. I'm hoping to have Printshop print and bind them in an assortment of beautiful cardstock! Because the file is so big, I wasn't able to upload ALL of the pages...there are multiple clones of many of the pages, including 36 weeks worth of planning sheets. With this in mind, I have given you the "meat" of the planner. If you think of anything else I can add to it, please let me know!
As always, use if you'd like!

Cheez-It Math-Area, Perimeter, & Making Words!
So, I created my original Cheez-It math activity in 1999...yes, I've been teaching that long :) and LOVE this activity! I've added to it throughout the years and finally decided to transform it into a SB lesson.
I have an "activity page" (AKA worksheet) that goes along with it (which I'll have to find), but quite honestly, I'm more of a "record your work in your math journal" anyway. I'm going to post the SB lesson and if you think of anything that would enhance this activity, please let me know. BTW, there are a few pictures that I found randomly in the Internet to help provide examples...I guess great minds think alike :)
